"Offering hand-up,
not a hand-out"

Habitat for Humanity Partners

Partner Families

Many individuals and families who live and work in Stillwater find that decent housing is either not available or not affordable to them. This is the situation in which we are seeking to offer a hand-up not a hand-out.

We are now accepting applications for the next house to be built.

There are three important areas that are considered in the qualification and selection process for Habitat for Humanity partner families:

  • Need
    • Your present housing is substandard or inadequate
    • You are unable to obtain adequate housing through other conventional means.
  • Ability to pay for the new house
    • You are able to make the monthly house payment
    • Your credit is good and your income and employment records are stable
    • Your income falls within certain guidelines.
  • Willingness to partner
    • When selected, you become a "partner family".
    • As a "partner family," you agree to work a certain number of hours with volunteers on the building of your home and the house of another Habitat family. These hours will count toward your total "sweat equity" contribution to be completed before becoming a homeowner. We hope our families will become lifelong partners in our mission, continuing long after the "minimum requirements" have been met. Special arrangements will be made for physical limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions you might have about the process:

How does a family get qualified for a Habitat home?

Once we receive an application, the information is verified and the income vs expenses, and credit history for each applicant is reviewed to make sure the applicant is able to make the monthly house payment.

Qualified applicants are contacted to be interviewed and visited in their current home situation. Once one or more applicants sucessfully completes the process, the Family Selection Committee presents those candidates to the Board for selection.

When do you accept applications?

To have current information when selecting a partner family, we open applications just prior to the anticipated ground breaking of a SHfH home. The actual process can vary according to the specfific circumstances of our volunteer pool and the volume of applicants.

How long does it take to be approved?

This is a hard question to answer. The Stillwater Board of Directors is committed to building 1-2 (or even more) houses each year but getting qualified families is often harder than building houses.

How can I speed up the process?

By submitting a complete and accurate application, you will help us save valuable time and make the process much quicker.

Did you know?

Everyone can get one free credit report every year.
Get a copy of yours (Click here) to make sure everything on it is correct.

If I have bad credit, does it mean I can't get a Habitat home?

Not necessarily. If the credit problems are due to medical bills and/or if Consumer Credit Counseling can establish a plan for you that is workable, you might still be able to qualify for a home, either now or in the future.

Do you have to have a big family to qualify for a Habitat Home?

No. We have all kinds of families as Habitat partners. Single people, single parent, two parent, young, and not so young.

Our mission is to give a hand-up to help people get out of substandard or otherwise inadequate housing here in Stillwater, Oklahoma. If you, or someone you know, might qualify for a home, please send them this information or print and give them an application packet.

Remember, WE are our community. Let's all join together.

Habitat Restore

Stillwater Habitat ReStore The Habitat ReStore was opened in September 2002 as a re-sale business to benefit Stillwater Habitat for Humanity. We sell a variety of donated items, but with an emphasis on new or like new building materials, furniture, appliances, lighting fixtures, plumbing items, doors & windows, tools, and hardware. We are always interested in expanding our hours, however, we are limited by the number of volunteers available to work at the store.

In addtion to Stillwater Habitat for Humanity, the proceeds also benefit Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency and Stillwater Domestic Violence.

Habitat for Humanity International

Habitat for Humanity International works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all works of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which people can experience God ’s love, and can live and grow into all that God intends.

To visit the Habitat for Humanity International site, please click here.

Stillwater Habitat for Humanity is in covenant with Habitat for Humanity International. Each year we reaffirm our covenant with other affiliates and with Habitat International to accomplish our mission. Acknowledging God's abundant provision, Stillwater Habitat for Humanity is committed to share their firstfruits through the practice and discipline of tithing 10 percent of cash revenues toward international house-building efforts.

In January 2006, we voted to designate our tithe to Mozambique. Ron Beer, a long-time volunteer in the Stillwater affiliate has been instrumental in developing a habitat affiliate there. He likened the conditions to what Oklahoma was like 100 years ago. There is not a single answer when referring to “what is a Habitat Mozambique house” but following are pictures of some of the houses being built.

Stillwater Board of REALTORS®

The Stillwater Board of REALTORS® is partnering with us to build a house. Each square foot cost the contributor $60.00. All donations will be used to purchase materials for the construction of a 1231 sq. ft. home. Construction of the home will not start until 100% of funds are received.

"Buy a Foot ~ Build a House ~ Be a Hero"

Stillwater Board of REALTORS "Buy a Foot Build a House Be a Hero"As donations are received, the "house" will be highlighted to show the progress of the program. Once all funds are received and building begins, we'll have a link to view the progress of the house construction.

To join this effort, contact any Stillwater area Board of REALTORS® member or call the Stillwater Board of REALTORS® Office at (405) 372-4499.
